Change to Remote Access Logon for Library Research Databases

Starting July 17, 2006, connecting to the UB Libraries' subscription-based resources through a third-party ISP will become easier. When prompted, you will no longer need to enter your 29072 library number to authenticate yourself. Instead, simply use your UBITName and password.

Your UBITName is your University at Buffalo Information Technology username. You can find your UBITName online or on a UBITName Lookup Station at one of the CIT public computing sites. For further technical assistance with your UBITName, please contact:

Compendex and INSPEC now on the Ei Village Platform

The University Libraries are now providing access to Compendex (aka Engineering Index) as well as the INSPEC database (covering physics, electrical engineering, computer and control technologies, and information science) on Engineering Information Inc.'s (Ei's) Engineering Village2 platform. The start date for the new subscription was July 1st.

There are a number of benefits associated with switching from the OVID platform to the Village for accessing Compendex:

  • Access to more years, from 1969 to the present, rather than 1980 to the present. (INSPEC coverage remains the same as on OVID, from 1969 onward.)

  • A quicker, more intuitive way to search Compendex with other databases simultaneously (currently the INSPEC database, which we have also moved from OVID to the Village, as mentioned above).

  • A nice analyze feature that displays in the right-hand column. The analyze feature allows you to analyze any search set and rank the results by author, organization, journal name, subject terms, and other fields.

The databases will soon be SFX-enabled, allowing us to link from inside them to our many full-text e-journal subscriptions. This feature should be fully implemented within the first month of access. Because Engineering Information Inc. is owned by Elsevier and we subscribe to Elsevier's Science Direct e-journal system, those full-text links are operational now. Also marked as full text are papers from SPIE; please note however that UB does not have electronic access to those.

You can link to the two databases, Compendex and INSPEC, respectively, through the Databases by Title page at:

http://libweb.lib.buffalo.edu/infotree/DatabasesbyTitle.asp

or you can go through the Libraries' intermediate pages for each database, which sit on a proxy server, allowing UB affiliates logging in from home using a commercial Internet server provider to authenticate their session:

http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/e-resources/compendex.html
http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/e-resources/inspec.html

or, since access is controlled by IP address, you can also go directly to the site if you are on a machine logged into the UB network:

http://www.engineeringvillage2.org

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or problems with the new platform.
